Garrett Klein

  1. Trumpet

Performer and Educator

Garrett Klein is living his childhood dreams of being a professional trumpet player and teacher. Mr. Klein is the newest member of the acclaimed Dallas Brass, and will be reaching audiences across the country with this dynamic and versatile ensemble. With the Dallas Brass, Garrett combines his love of performing with his passion for inspiring the next generation of musicians.

Outside of performing with the Dallas Brass, Mr. Klein can be seen playing with professional symphony orchestras, and as a soloist. Past orchestral engagements have been with The Phoenix Symphony, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, the New World Symphony, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Musicians of the Minnesota Orchestra. Much of his orchestral training has taken place at the Aspen Music Festival and the National Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge, CO.  Recent solo appearances include a performance of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, and Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in E-flat. A strong proponent of new music, Garrett has presented fresh compositions at International Trumpet Guild Conferences in Columbus, OH and San Antonio, TX.  His doctoral dissertation at Arizona State University involves recording five new sonatas by composers from all over the world.

Garrett is in the final stages of completing a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree at Arizona State University, with a concentration in Music Theory Pedagogy. While at ASU, he served as the Graduate Teaching Assistant to the internationally recognized soloist and pedagogue David Hickman.

Before moving to Arizona, Garrett spent a year living abroad in Singapore. He attended the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, studying with William Theis. Garrett also spent much of his time in Singapore teaching music through Partners in Brass, the country's leading music education resource for brass students. As a freelance musician in Singapore, he was a featured soloist on the soundtrack of the 2012 Singapore National Day Parade, performed with Australian jazz legend James Morrison, and performed with many of the local orchestras. Garrett has been fortunate to take part in educational outreach trips throughout Singapore, as well as to Malaysia and Burma. While in Burma, he had the distinct honor of performing for the Burmese democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, at her famous estate.

Garrett received his Bachelor's of Music degree from St. Olaf College in Minnesota, where he studied with Dr. Martin Hodel. It was at St. Olaf where Garrett met his wife, Mara, and together they discovered their passion for travel and the great outdoors. They currently reside in Saint Peter, MN with their dog, Scout.

Please enjoy samples of solo, orchestral, and chamber performances.

As much as I enjoy playing the trumpet, I enjoy teaching it to others even more. I strive to have every lesson be productive, educational, and goal-oriented, all in a fun atmosphere. When teaching, I like to be as transparent as possible, which gives students the "why" instead of simply "what." My goal when teaching is for a student to walk away from a lesson feeling energized about their playing and motivated to practice.

I'm proud to say that my students have achieved a number of successes including admission to notable university music programs (Arizona State University and University of Arizona), acceptance to AZ All-Regional Band and Orchestra, participation in the Phoenix Youth Symphony program, and summers spent touring with the top Drum and Bugle Corps organizations in the country.

I teach out of my home studio in Saint Peter, MN, but I'm willing to travel to your home for an added fee. I also offer Skype lessons. Please contact me for more information, rates, and availability.
